Melissa Ferrick was the recipient of the Roots on the River music festival’s 6th Annual Songwriter’s Award. The singer/songwriter appeared surprised when event organizer Steve Chipman took the stage to make the announcement.

The award, conceived by Chipman and sponsored by Vermont Festivals, LLC and Vintage Parlor guitars, acknowledges the best of the festival’s songwriting artists in a rather unique way. Winners receive a vintage acoustic guitar to serve as a working “thank you” for their contribution to roots music.

Past recipients of the award have included Eileen Jewel, Sarah Borges, Abbie Gardner, Audrey Auld and last year’s winner, Zoe Muth.

Ferrick received her award as part of the 13th Roots on the River Music Festival. The four-day festival, held each year in Bellows Falls, Vt., offers new acts, Grammy Award winning music and a few perennial favorites. The performers include international acts as well as local favorites.
