A Japanese lesbian couple opted for a true storybook approach to their recent wedding — tying the knot in the shadow of Cinderella Castle at Toyko Disneyland. Koyuki Higashi, who is identified by The New York Times as a stage actress turned gay rights activist, wed her partner Hiroko in front of about 30 guests at the popular theme park and resort. It was the first same-sex wedding to take place at Tokyo Disneyland.
Although the wedding itself was purely symbolic as same-sex marriage does not have legal standing in Japan, the bride noted, “We may not have a law that applies to us, but when someone congratulates us for the wedding, I will proudly say, ‘Thank you!'”
