LGBT rights have a voice in the Latino community

New Latino coalition launchesBY SARAH VRBA

A new coalition was launched over the weekend entitled “Familia es Familia”. This new coalition illustrates that the Latino community is an asset in the fight for LGBT rights throughout the United States. Over the weekend 21 different Latino organizations, including the Dolores Huerta Foundation and the League of United Latin American Citizens, announced their support and endorsement of “Familia es Familia” at the National Council of La Raza in Las Vegas, reports.

“Familia es Familia” is a bilingual coalition that hopes to inspire communication and offer resources to Latino families and the Latino LGBT community. In an interview with NPR’s Maria Hinojosa, “Familia es Familia” co-founder Ingrid Duran explains the importance and goals of the coalition:

“At the end of the day, no matter what the journey is, you are still a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, a mother, a father, and nothing changed from five minutes before you came out.”
