In response to recent disturbances between athletes on the question of LGBT acceptance in the locker room, the Women’s Final Four will host an LGBT-support training session for coaches prior to the games in New Orleans. Sports Project Director Helen Carroll and Policy Counsel member Ashland Johnson of the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) will lead the session entitled “LGBT Athletes Join the Team: A Discussion of Challenges and Solutions at the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four.”
The NCLR hopes to address challenges coaches may face in relation to LGBT players. Topics will include coming out, teammates dating teammates, harmful recruiting tactics that players have suffered because of their sexual orientation, and how to deal with homophobic and transphobic comments by players and fans.
