To mark the release of the new iPhone 5, I’ve compiled a list of my top 10 favorite travel apps. As many of you may know I travel extensively, crossing time zones, continents and cultures. While on the go, I like to be connected, get the best images and videos using my smartphone, explore destinations based on the advice of locals, check in on my flight status and get the best seats available. Fortunately, the ability to do all this rests in the palm of my hand.

I have personally traveled with each of this applications and they have saved me on multiple occasions. Based on my own travel experiences as an out gay traveler, here a list of 10 must-have travel apps.

WhatsApp Messenger (USD $.99)

Avoid roaming and international data plans when traveling. Exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger runs on WiFi same as email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends. In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.
