Melissa Etheridge might be headed back to the Great White Way. She and girlfriend Linda Wallem, “Nurse Jackie” series co-writer, are collaborating on a play that Etheridge kiddingly refers to as a hybrid of “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” by way of “American Idiot.”

“I’ve always loved musicals and Broadway. I mean, I am gay!” Etheridge, 51, recently told an interviewer. “But when I was much younger. I loved ‘Godspell’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.’ I loved the drama in them, and I always thought that was the ultimate, so that’s still my dream.”

If Etheridge indeed makes her way to Broadway, it won’t be her first visit.

Early last year, she had a guest spot playing “St. Jimmy,” the lead role in the production of “American Idiot,” the acclaimed musical based on the Green Day concept album of the same name.
