A fundamentalist Christian minister, John McTernan, has posted on his blog that Hurricane Sandy is plain and simple proof that “God is systematically destroying America.” His comments echo some made last year by Congresswoman Michele Bachmann after Hurricane Irene. God, said Bachmann, has given us natural disasters to tell the U.S. to cut government.
McTernan’s concern is not about big government and agencies such as FEMA (which GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney says should be disbanded). Rather, McTernan says that extreme weather events are divine communications of God’s displeasure about marriage equality and the “homosexual agenda.”
