Why Women's Bookstores?
We at Lesbian.com understand the extreme importance of Lesbian/Feminist Bookstores. The four of us who are focused on keeping Lesbian.com moving along "came out" and "found family" in the late 70's in Lesbian/Feminist Bookstores. These bookstores are slipping away from our community. Borders, Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com and others like them are moving into our neighborhoods where small independent bookstores once lived and the small business owner simply can not compete... "You've Got Mail" is an excellent example, minus the het story line.
We are fiercely committed to finding ways in which Lesbian.com can support keeping these important epicenters alive. One of the ways in which we feel we can be helpful is to keep a list of Lesbian/Feminist Bookstores and Presses posted on Lesbian.com. Carol Seajay, formerly the director of the Feminist Bookstore News, kept a list such as this going for years. Carol is moving onto other things in her life and we honor her steadfastness in keeping the list going all those years.
In addition to Carol, we honor all those have worked in, bought books from, organized or attended an event in a lesbian/feminist bookstore. We at Lesbian.com encourage all of us to seek out the small independent bookstores in our communities. Here is a way you can help. Please send us the name and any information you have about a bookstore in your community. This store does not have to be Lesbian owned if it does indeed support the lesbian community and one can find queer books stocked on the shelves. We will then contact that store to see if they would like to be included in the Lesbian.com bookstore list.
We thank you in advance and remember support the independents in your communities.
