Two more Democrat Senators have added themselves to an increasing list of lawmakers who are in favor of marriage equality. Senator Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota issued statements on Friday morning announcing that their opposition to marriage equality was no more. This brings the total to 53 Senators supporting marriage equality, a majority by 6 as it stands, should a vote ever arise.
Heitkamp released a statement on her website outlining her change of mind: “In speaking with North Dakotans from every corner of our great state, and much personal reflection, I have concluded the federal government should no longer discriminate against people who want to make lifelong, loving commitments to each other or interfere in personal, private, and intimate relationships.”
